Stress Module Discussion

Q Initial Post: Imagine an alien from another planet has just landed (and somehow speaks English). The alien does not understand what stress is and claims to never have experienced it. Try to explain to the alien what stress is and why people experience it. Since the alien does not experience stress, what parts of the brain/nervous system might its species not have evolved? How do the terms compassion fatigue and burnout relate to stress? Reply Post: Read another student's initial post, preferably you will choose a post with no reply to it yet in order for us to include all students in the discussion. Respond with a question you would have as the alien after hearing that response. How would you answer your own question?

Stress is a physiological and psychological response to a perceived threat or challenge (Kemeny, 2003). It's the body's way of preparing to handle a difficult or demanding situation. When we encounter a stressful situation, our body releases hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, which activate our "fight or flight" response (Kemeny, 2003). This response helps us react quickly to a potential danger or threat. Humans experience stress in different situations, such as work deadlines, financial problems, relationship issues, or even in positive situations like planning a wedding or welcoming a new baby.
